The architectural composition created by the Viennese architect Karl Schwanzer with the tower ("Four Cylinders") and the "Key" of the BMW Museum in front of it in 1970-73 is very well known indeed. The windows and façade needed to be renewed after the refurbishment that was due after three decades, and the building needed bringing completely up to date in technical areas such as heating,  ventilation, and electrical and sanitary equipment, and also fire protection devices.

Here monument preservation viewpoints were as important as the demand for modern energy specifications. Moving away from complete air-conditioning, and providing windows that can be opened individually and maximum use of daylight at the desk through light control correspond with recent insights into the physiology of work. Organization of the 1500 workplaces following new office concepts was also addressed. It turned out that after appropriate renovation the building was still able to meet all modern demands without any concessions.

One key aim of the renewal was that the building, which was already seen as "historic", should not be allowed to fade away as "memorial architecture", but that its own design rules, appropriate to the time when it was built, should continue to apply. On the other hand, the process did not simply involve the material reconstruction of worn-out parts and furnishings, but was intended to interpret its expressive architectural devices and their transformation using today's resources and materials. The art is also part of the claim to completeness and challenge. It was specially commissioned for the building, integrated into the structure and enters into symbiosis with the architecture.
